If not for You

One of the reasons I resisted religion was because I was had such a high regard for the language of art – it spoke to my life like nothing else.

But after a while I began to realise that scripture is poetry, and, moreover, I began to see parallels between my life and those spoken of in the Bible.

Once I accepted this kind of interrelational approach to reading religious texts, I began to apply it to art – so, for example, secular ballads can become songs of praise, if you understand God as their object.

(Of course, soul music is basically secularised gospel music anyway – and vice versa – so this would not be new…)
